The Mayflower Theatre is the biggest theatre on England’s south coast,

with a vision to be nationally recognised in providing inspiring experiences. Founded in 1928, it has a long history of supporting diverse culture and entertainment, hosting everyone from The Beatles to Disney’s The Lion King. In 2015, the theatre experienced its largest attendance ever. Since then, it’s consistently seen annual attendance exceeding 500,000 — excluding those years impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns.

In this member Q&A we asked The Mayflower team what’s special about the theatre, what they are focusing on in 2022 and how working with Tessitura helps them achieve their goals.

1. What’s special about Mayflower Theatre, Southampton?

We are the biggest theatre on England’s south coast with just over 2,270 seats in our auditorium. In 1986 our theatre was saved by our community and bought by Southampton City Council and handed to the Mayflower Theatre Trust, to prevent it from being turned into a bingo hall. Our vision is to be nationally recognised in providing inspiring experiences.

2. What are you focusing on in 2022?

We delivered some fantastic projects across the city during 2020 and 2021, but COVID has definitely had its impacts. We are regenerating and recovering from this, and particularly excited that Southampton is bidding to become the UK City of Culture in 2025. This is a huge opportunity for the city to celebrate the wealth of cultural activity already taking place and showcase the city’s diversity.

3. What do you value about our partnership?

"Being a nonprofit, Tessitura is aligned with our aims."

Our partnership with Tessitura provides us great support. Being a nonprofit, Tessitura is aligned with our aims. It is wonderful to be connected to so many venues via the Tessitura community.

4. How does Tessitura support your goals?

“We love that Tessitura is as customisable as we need it to be to any new needs we might have.”

Tessitura’s existing features met the needs of our initial project, but we love that Tessitura is as customisable as we need it to be to any new needs we might have. The support and dependability for our large on-sales is superb.
